What does the future hold for coal regions?

10/04/2019

Although we primarily focus on the future of the energy industry and the innovative technologies that will make it cleaner, smarter, and more effective, we are not indiferent to its traditional pillars. Emerging trends propelled by European legislation and intensified by the shift in public perception of the importance of environmental protection will bring about major changes and their impact will befall especially the regions that have been historically dependent on the traditional coal-powered energy industry. It was an honour for us to attend the "Structural transformation of coal regions - experience from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, and the EU" debate which focused on this very topic. The debate was held by the Czech office of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in cooperation with the Institute for European politics Europeum and the Centre for transportation and energy in Evropský dům.
